Jobs: I [finally] have one!

For the first time in a year and a half, I will be working for someone else. For the first time in a year and a half, I’ll be receiving a paycheck! Starting at the end of January, I’ll be working in the tasting room at a winery on beautiful Seneca Lake. After three months of job searching, all I can say is: phew. That was kind of tough. If […]

Lucifer Falls tries to steal our souls!

“Why don’t you climb up on that ledge to take a photo,” Paul said. “That way you’ll cut out all that stuff in the foreground.” I mumbled a response about how I kind of liked the stuff in the foreground, but what I was thinking was, “Nice try, Lucifer. I’m not going to make it that easy for you.” Lucifer had already made me dizzy, the way he popped out […]

Hooray for Beaujolais Nouveau and Red Feet Wine Market!

Today is the third Thursday of November! Today is the day that Beaujolais Nouveau emerges from the temporary storage rooms of French wineries and makes its way around the globe, bringing joy to wine lovers (then leaving them with terrible, terrible hangovers on the third Friday in November). Oh, Beaujolais Nouveau…some people hate it a lot, some people hate it a little. I don’t know anyone who would say that they love the wine. For […]

So, I’m trying to think of a clever title for this post about gorges near Ithaca…

That’s what everyone says, right — “Ithaca is Gorges.” We have, at last count, three items in our (downsized) house that bear those three words. You can’t go anywhere here without seeing these three words stamped or printed or carved on every object imaginable. The phrase even has an entry in the urban dictionary. With that said, um…yes…this area is gorgeous. Reminding us of that fact on a regular basis […]

Making friends is hard…

Browsing around Ithaca Craigslist for couches, I spotted the “Strictly Platonic” section and was intrigued. We don’t have any old friends still living in the Ithaca area, and I don’t really know how to make friends anymore. Especially without a job (i.e. especially when I rarely leave the house). So, strictly platonic, you say. Why not? Here’s the first one that caught my eye: Couple seeking Coulpe – mw4mw – […]

Ithaca Food, Ten Years Later

This weekend, we were at Just a Taste in Ithaca and we thought we recognized our waitress. “Have you worked here for a while,” I asked. “Yeah. A loooooong time,” she said. “Like ten years? We haven’t been here for ten years and you look familiar.” “Longer than that,” she said. I knew it! One of the most fun parts of being back in the area is sampling our old […]

The Ride Across (Driving from Chicago to Ithaca in a Penske Truck)

If you’ve followed this blog for a while, you know that Lisa does something like 98% of the driving. She’s a pro. And she gets carsick when I (reluctantly, of course) volunteer to drive the winding, fun roads. We’ve put 35,000 miles on our van in the last year. Of that, I’ve maybe driven, let’s say, 20 hours, max. Let’s also assume 60 MPH, so 1,200 miles. That revises my […]

It’s official – we finally have a place to call home – a real apartment, not a bedroom on wheels. It’s got walls, doors, a few sinks, a fridge. A stove that doesn’t fold up into a suitcase. A roof and a porch. It even has two toilets. TWO toilets! Our toilet count will shortly increase by like 200%!! In two weeks, home will be a two bedroom duplex in the […]

Apartment Hunting in Ithaca

Well, we made it east. Last week was a long week. We started the week in London, flew to Chicago, trained to Wisconsin, then reversed that back to Chicago, emptied our Chicago storage closet, rented a moving truck, and drove east. Now we’re settled into a new storage closet in Ithaca and living with Lisa’s parents while we shop for an apartment 80 miles away. Problem is, there aren’t a […]

Looking Forward to Ithaca

By     |    Sep 27, 2012

Yes, we’re having a great time in London. And on one hand, I don’t really want to leave. On the other, I’m really looking forward to getting settled into Ithaca. Here’s what I’m looking forward to. Downsizing  Yep, downsizing. We’ll move everything from our storage locker to Ithaca, but I bet a lot gets donated to the Ithaca thrift stores. We’re so used to living with less that I don’t […]
