“First we had to work to earn enough money for the trip.  Terry was all for starting at once with the twenty dollars I had left.  I didn’t like it.  And, like a damn fool, I considered the problem for two days…until my twenty dwindled to just over ten.” – Jack Kerouac, On the Road Moral: plan, but don’t plan for too long.  We have a target, and we think […]

© Lisa McNamara There’s no work in walking and it fueled the talk I would grab my shoes and then away I’d walk Through all the stubborn beauty I’d start at the dawn Until the sun had fully stopped Parting of the Sensory – Modest Mouse I’ve been thinking.  What was the exact moment I realized that this corporate job thing wasn’t going to cut it?  That I couldn’t keep […]

Sleeping In A Car

By     |    Aug 21, 2010

We did a bit of a test run last weekend — we drove out to visit Lisa’s parents in central New York.  On our way out, we stopped at a rest area to sleep a bit.  Lisa took the back seat, I leaned the passenger seat back, and we learned a few things: We knew that light (and privacy) would be an issue sometimes.  Boy is that true.  Creepy dudes […]

Can We Be Soccer Moms?

In my mind, the ideal vehicle is an old International Harvester Scout.  It gets about 40 MPG, has a queen bed in the back, and is a 2010 model of perfect reliability.  I have a cantilevered kitchen rigged up in the back with a 4-burner stove and oven.  I can’t seem to find this for sale on craigslist, nor can I seem to convince Lisa it may exist. photo credit: […]

I’ve Always Wanted To Do That

By     |    Jul 29, 2010

We’re slowly starting to share our plans.  The universal reply so far has been: “I’ve always wanted to do that.”  There’s usually a bit of silence then, followed quickly by a recommendation, tip, or travel idea … or all three.   Here’s what we’ve heard so far: Dave recommended a Toyota “Spaceship” — seems like a sweet ride to me.  I wonder if they sell those in Chicago. Amy shared […]

The Basic Plan

By     |    Jul 16, 2010

The most basic plan is that there is no plan.  We just want to see what happens and go wherever the hell we want.  But there are some plan details, some nuances, some qualifiers. We’ll be traveling alone, but plan to visit basically everyone we know — or as many friends as we can.  If you’re reading this, that probably means we want to visit you.  We’ll want to do […]

Our Travel Guidelines

I don’t enjoy being dirty; I like to be clean.  Realizing that we need some sort of ground rules, some guidelines, to prevent petty arguments about bathing schedules, we’ve put together a simple list of travel guidelines.  These are the things we feel we must do to ensure our sanity: Shower at least every other day.  Preferably every day.  Actual shower conditions are unimportant – can be $1 truck stop […]

Choosing The Perfect Road Trip Vehicle

By     |    Jul 8, 2010

We’ve started debating vehicles.  We need space, speed, reliability, efficiency, comfort … everything.  But we really only have five criteria: Good gas mileage.  30 would be great.  We’re definitely not buying a car that gets 20.  50 is wishful thinking thanks to criteria #2. The ability to sleep in it (semi-comfortably).  We need to be able to lay down in it and sleep when we’re too lazy or unable to […]

What Will We Do With All Our Stuff?

By     |    Jul 3, 2010

Our 2-bedroom apartment if filled with … stuff.  There’s furniture and books and appliances and clothing and toys and electronics and blankets and rugs and spoons and knives and cups and magazines and pictures and paintings.  It’s everywhere.  But there are no children, no pets.  There are a few plants.  We can do this. We’ll sell the big stuff.  Goodbye, couch.  Adios, bed.  We’ll find you a new home on […]

Here’s To Now

It’s time for now.  Time to see things.  Time to watch things.  Time to go :::::: places.  We’ll see you shortly. Here’s to now! This song is from the movie 180° South — a great documentary about a Patagonian adventure.  Outside Magazine remarked: “It will make you quit your job.”  They may have been right.
