Things I Love about London

London is a great city. Here’s what I’m falling in love with: Free museums. Most museums have free general admission. Special exhibits are extra. Smart. “Real” ale. I asked what “unreal” ale was and got strange looks. So much for that inquiry. Anyway, the beers here pulled from the old-school taps are phenomenal. I love their low carbonation and large size. One of my favorites is Adnams Bitter. Breakfast. I had a […]

A Rant about Modern Art and the Tate Modern

I don’t get modern art. Don’t get me wrong, I like modern art, sometimes, but I don’t usually GET it. I’m pretty convinced that no one other than very imaginative people, other artists, and art students actually GET it. I’m pretty sure that sometimes (often?) there’s nothing there to be gotten. But I love exhibits at places like the Museum of Contemporary Art (aka the MCA) in Chicago, the new Modern Wing at the […]

“Direct” Flight to London

We wanted a direct flight when flying to London, didn’t want to transfer. Of course, no flight is truly direct. Here’s what we went through to get from A (Lake Geneva, WI, USA) to B (London, England, UK). Drive to Harvard, IL (40 minutes) Our travel day started with a drive into Illinois. We had been staying with my mom in Wisconsin. She was nice enough to get us through […]

The Dogs Are Better In London

We’re just around the corner from London Fields park, one of the seemingly endless London public parks. The parks are wonderful, but the space isn’t the most amazing thing about them. It’s the dogs. Like a lot of parks, people bring their dogs to London Fields. The dogs run and play and sniff and sit. Which you’d expect, that part is just like every other park in the world. The […]

Local London pub update: allegiances shift to The Fox!

Things were going OK in our relationship with our local pub, the Prince Arthur. We visited three days in a row and got friendly with the staff. We were charged for something we didn’t order the first day, but didn’t worry too much about it (it was just a couple £s). Then, the third day, we were charged for about six extra drinks. I thought I had the problem fixed, […]

Drinking is EXPENSIVE in London

Damn, wine’s expensive here. Booze is expensive too. Let’s do some maths. (Things get pluraled oddly over here. “Horsepowers” is  a legit term.) In California, where we found the cheapest wine on our trip, they sell Two Buck Chuck at Trader Joe’s– a bottle of Charles Shaw wine for $2. Converted into £s, that’s £1.23 (the current exchange rate is £1 = $1.60). Now, we know we’re not in California. Everywhere else in […]

The best views of London

All the guides say that the best way to arrive in Greenwich is via water taxi. Why not depart Greenwich via water taxi instead? And you’ve got to go to Greenwich. Before the London Eye was built, one of the best views of London was probably from the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. Plus, you can stand on the Prime Meridian, the point where East goes one way and West goes the […]

Our Local Pub: The Prince Arthur

Update: We’ve been over-charged twice now (they keep putting extra items on our bill), so we’re no longer in love with this place. Lisa’s in love with The Fox. I’m partial to The Spurstowe Arms. We’ve found our local pub. I, honestly, don’t need to go to any other bars in London. I just want to hang out at my pub, The Prince Arthur. We’ve ended up there the last […]

First impressions of London

By     |    Sep 11, 2012

First impressions…are usually wrong, but sometimes right. My first impression of London is that it’s a mashup of Paris, Chicago, and Boston. Everything is truly becoming global: if we wanted, we could watch only American TV shows, drink only Budweiser, and eat at Subway, KFC, and Dominos for the next three weeks. But I think we’ll branch out. The neighborhood where we’re staying, Hackney, is full of “Hackney Hipsters” who look […]

Next Stop: London

By     |    Sep 7, 2012

Well, we leave for London this weekend. We can’t wait. We’ll be van-free for the first time in months. Instead of piling stuff in the van and cooking on the Coleman, we’ll be strolling down Piccadilly and searching for chicken tikka. We’ve got to fit everything we need into a suitcase instead of a minivan. And that’s been tricky. We couldn’t find our power converter in our midden of a storage closet. […]
